A recent study indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
